SEATTLE, WA -- (MARKETWIRE) -- 03/12/13 -- ClearSign Combustion Corporation (NASDAQ: CLIR) today announced that, following a successful presentation last year, CTO Joe Colannino has again been invited to present a technical paper "Progress and Recent Advances Using ECC™ Technology" at the American Flame Research Committee's (AFRC) Industrial Combustion Symposium, "Safe and Responsible Development in the 21st Century," to be held in Kauai, Hawaii on September 22 - 25, 2013.
ClearSign CEO Rick Rutkowski said, "The AFRC Symposium is held in Hawaii every third year to maximize international participation. It has been widely regarded as a preeminent international forum combining practical development and fundamental research in combustion technology. It is very gratifying that ClearSign's ECC technology has been selected to present at this important conference for two years running. CTO Joe Colannino added, "It's always an honor to be accepted to present at the AFRC Symposium. This year, we are especially excited because we have achieved so many important milestones since we last reported to the committee in September of last year. Of particular interest, I believe, will be our successful demonstrations of flame attachment effects at commercially relevant, one million BTUs per hour scale. This announcement came only a few weeks after last year's presentation. Since that time, we have experimented with and demonstrated numerous flame shaping and flame stabilizing techniques utilizing a variety of electrode configurations, and measured significant reductions in NOx using novel burner designs -- all based on electrodynamic control of fluid effects. We are especially keen to share with the committee our latest work relating to our innovative Duplex™ two-tiered burner design architecture. This novel method for reducing NOx allows us to produce short, well-controlled flames that dramatically improve flame pattern and have the potential to eliminate artifacts like flame impingement or fire clouds. Using this technique, we expect to achieve better flame control, allowing us to increase precious heater capacity and process throughput while keeping NOx at, or below, the level of commercially available low NOx burners."
The American Flame Research Committee (AFRC) is composed of representatives of industrial and research organizations and associated eminent combustion expert members in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The AFRC sponsors open forums in North America on applied combustion technology and research and supports the applied combustion research activities of the International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF). The IFRF is a worldwide network of industrial companies and academic institutes working to achieve cleaner and more efficient industrial combustion. The main task of the Foundation is thus the acquisition and generation of information with which to design flames for the efficient heating of industrial processes, with minimal environmental effects.
Prior to joining ClearSign, Joe Colannino was the head of global R&D at John Zink Company, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries and a worldwide leader in the supply of combustion and air pollution control equipment to the energy industry. There, his responsibilities included management of intellectual property, and oversight of John Zink's testing facility and of the John Zink Institute, which trains more than 1,000 students per year in various aspects of combustion. Joe is a registered professional engineer with more than 25 years experience in the combustion industry and has written and reviewed problems appearing on the NCEES professional engineering exam, given in all 50 states for professional engineering licensure. Joe's areas of expertise include R&D management, combustion, pollutant formation and control, and statistical experimental design.
